Negotiating the Communication Minefield

Effective communication is an acquired skill – though, not all managers know how to communicate effectively. Words have meanings and associations – same words can mean different things to different people. Then, there are hidden meanings, fine nuances, body language, and outright contradictions between actions and words, not to mention, human nature…walking through this minefield can be tough – on top of that, you need emotional intelligence and people skills. I don’t think you can ever say you have mastered all the skills of communication and now you have become an effective communicator. You live and learn - it’s always a process. by Fareeha Qayoom

Doom and Gloom Galore

Citizens should be allowed to let off steam in peaceful healthy ways. There is a lot of hidden anger that comes out when people are protesting on the roads, on television and in the news, but especially when they are protesting against power outages. By Fareeha Qayoom

My inspiration board

All the major style books advise you to first create your own inspiration board – this will help you plan the wardrobe of your dreams. Your style choices should allow you to express yourself. By Fareeha Qayoom

Book Review: Eduardo Porter’s ‘the price of everything’

...If all you know is economics, everything looks like cost-benefit analysis. By everything, he means literally everything, life, death and love, freedom, religion and culture, parenting, shopping, and garbage. Where you buy your coffee, where you plan to live and even the number of kids you plan to have and will it be a boy child or a girl child; it all boils down to prices – and it’s all relative.

Mosquitoes, flies, and the paranoid

So what the heck is it? Are we just paranoid or are they really out to get us? They don’t let you sleep, work or even die in peace – is it a giant conspiracy, general incompetence or just plain dumb series of unfortunate events that dog Pakistan and her citizens every day? You decide. By Fareeha Qayoom

Coke Studio – Season 5 Kicks off with a bang!

Coke Studio has finally arrived as a team (Orchestra). Technically it was a great episode – no jarring notes at all in the music collaborations - the house band, the backup vocalists and of course, Rohail Hayat all provided great musical support and back up to the vocalists – it’s now up to them (vocalists) to shine and come up with great new material. Pakistan Elections: May 11, 2013 – My Story

The people have spoken. Respecting their word and moving on with it is more important at this point than creating a lot of strife and unpleasantness which Mr. Khan managed to do from his sickbed in spite of things going well at the elections for him. My advice to the politicians, listen to your citizens and do a good job this time - together as a team. Your people are quite capable of voting you off like they did with PPP if you don’t deliver. (By the time I post this, Mr. Sharif has already met with Mr. Khan and tried to put the unpleasantness behind him. I guess he wants to play nice and be sensible this time. This is another good move on his part.) By Fareeha Qayoom

Random Thoughts on ‘A Little History of the World’

If you look at the overall pattern derived from world history, you would notice that elite and their bureaucracy are always trying to maintain the status quo or their hold on the silent majority while the silent majority occasionally overthrows them and tries to bring equality which never lasts because status quo must be maintained at all costs so the elite and their bureaucracy prevail in the long run. Retail Therapy: Winter Sales Blues…

I must say, I appreciate the text alert service that a few of my favorite apparel stores have started a few seasons back. It’s neat. At least the stores maintain a mailing list of their customers and try to stay in touch with them. It’s beside the point that they make no effort to listen to them though! By Fareeha Qayoom

Playing Ostrich

In my dream I was drowning my sorrows But my sorrows, they learned to swim Surrounding me, going down on me Spilling over the brim Waves of regret and waves of joy I reached out for the one I tried to destroy You...you said you'd wait 'til the end of the world By Fareeha Qayoom
