September is the month for back to back Fashion weeks kicking off from New York to end at Paris... By Fareeha Qayoom

I

had the dates down on a sticky note on my bulletin board with the Women’s spring 2012 fashion weeks marked on it – (September is the month for back to back Fashion weeks kicking off from New York  to end at Paris) – I even knew when to tune in but as usual too much going on so fashion had to take a back seat to the excitement of living in Pakistan…work, life, politics, mosquitoes, a lot more exciting stuff is happening right here…who has time to tune in for stuff that’s half way across the world. Besides, it’s going to take at least six months for the retailers to catch on for what’s in store for us next year. Not to mention, Pakistan, the fashion guys will take at least a year to translate those trends…so, no point in getting all that excited at the fashion front – huh?

Anyway, here’s the schedule for those of you who are interested –

  • New York – September 7-15
  • London – September 16-20
  • Milan – September 21-27
  • Paris – September 27 to October 5th

Fashion trends recap? Will keep you posted….work and life is pretty hectic right now! 😀 – As they say, no fun for the wicked!

New York Fashion Week: Marc Jacobs spring/summer 2012

Jacobs, tipped for the top job at Christian Dior, delivered what he called a ‘magical and interesting’ collection for next spring.

    BY Luke Leitch | 16 September 2011

Such was the condition of access to Marc Jacobs after his show – the last and by far the most interesting of New York’s Fashion Week – last night. Three threatening man-mountains loomed behind him, quivering in readiness to eject any who dared utter the D-word, or even whisper of the $10 million a year plus contract that Jacobs is understood to be angling for in return for succeeding John Galliano as its creative director.

But what makes this part of our job extra-amazing are the kooky happenings we catch while reporting from the trenches. Here, the top seven moments that made for a little comic relief this past week:

  4. Marc Jacobs brings big finale to NY Fashion Week

By Brigitte Dusseau (AFP) – 1 day ago

NEW YORK — Marc Jacobs drew a beautiful and audacious line under a New York Fashion Week that stood out for its optimism and bright yellows and oranges.

As he has in the past, Jacobs on Thursday chose the Armory in southern Manhattan rather than the Fashion Week headquarters at the Lincoln Center for his Spring-Summer 2012 show.

  21. Paris Fashion Week: Worst-dressed celebrities [Poll]
    October 3, 2011 | 3:37 pm

The list of celebrity attendees at Paris Fashion Week would rival that of the Oscars. You’d think with that many beautiful people roaming around, fashion faux pas would be at a minimum. But this year, they were rampant.

Among the worst dressed was Lindsay Lohan, who attended the KW by Kanye West runway show in a beige dress with what looked like a velour top, wrinkled bottom and too-long sleeves. You can’t tell in this picture, but the skirt was even frayed down the sides. She looked like a distraught Champagne Barbie in desperate need of a bra. There was also Jared Leto at Givenchy in a black sleeveless top with extremely low cut arms, giving everyone an unwanted peek at his furry pits. And at the Yves Saint Laurent show, Aussie pop queen Kylie Manogue looked like she stole a uniform from a candy striper, cut it up and sewed on a kangaroo pouch. Massive fail.

Paris Fashion Week began with a thud. It was the sound of the fashion industry’s bigwigs landing in a heap on the floor. Quelle horreur!

  25. Paris Fashion Week: Best and worst of the weekend

The most unrealistic expectations: Kanye West’s debut

On the one hand, his Paris Fashion Week debut lived up to the unreal amount of hype surrounding it. His small runway show was a painfully exclusive affair with a guest list that read like one giant front row: Anna Wintour, Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, Alexander Wang, Silvia Fendi, Azzedine Alaïa, Dean and Dan Caten, Olivier Theyskens, Jared Leto, Lindsay Lohan, Ciara, Joseph Altuzarra, Terry Richardson — the list of fashion insiders, power editors and designers goes on and on. West has been clear about his intentions to avoid being typecast. His fashion credibility was loud and clear, but the quality of the clothes on the runway was inconsistent. The collection felt like summer one moment with sexy, dresses in white that had skin-baring cut-outs, and winter the next with heavy fur embellished jackets and thick embroidered tops. His slouchy trousers seemed to hang on the models in unfortunate ways, but an opening leather jacket and skirt looked sleek and edgy. Bottom line, just because a person goes to a lot of fashion shows and spends time with a lot of very important fashion people, doesn’t necessarily mean that he can design a cohesive collection. That said, Kanye’s soundtrack, which included Waka Flocka Flame and the Fugees, was hands down the best of the week.

Milan fashion week: retro with a twist
In Milan, the designers were inspired by 50s fashion, but this was more complicated than mere nostalgia

So in all the fuss about E not actually equalling mc² after all, or whatevs, it is just about possible that you have missed the real shock news of the week, ie The 50s Are Back. Actually, the shock isn’t that the 50s are back. Decades come flying out of Milan fashion week like a machine churning out lottery numbers, and the 50s turn up fairly regularly. What is surprising is that the 50s look as seen in Milan this week is not a cutesy parade of bubblegummy prom frocks and perky ponytails, but something a bit darker, less literal and more interesting.

  28. Versace back on track 14 years after death of inspirational founder

Murder of Gianni Versace left famous label in turmoil, but sister Donatella’s collections have won over the critics

The house of Versace has been trapped in a paradox ever since the summer evening in 1997, when Gianni Versace was gunned down outside his Miami home. That event catapulted the Versace name from fashion magazines to every newspaper front page at the very moment the house was robbed of its defining talent.

Donatella Versace was on the catwalk in her brother’s place within months, but it has taken her well over a decade to make his seat in the Versace studio her own. In the past two years she has said that for the first time she feels she is speaking with her voice; critically, her collections have had a warm reception. Nobody knows which of these came first.

  31. Last day of Paris shows is good, bad and ugly

By JENNY BARCHFIELD, AP Fashion Writer – 10 hours ago

PARIS (AP) — The ninth and final day of Paris’ grueling ready-to-wear marathon was reminiscent of Sergio Leone’s classic 1966 spaghetti western, with good, bad and downright ugly displays.

With an average of 11 shows on the calendar daily, every day is, of course, a mixed bag. But because many top fashion editors tend to cut out early, there are fewer top-tier labels on the last day and more emerging designers who don’t have the deep pockets of the majors, which makes for an uneven experience.
