Some of the hot new trends are:

  • Tunics over trousers at Alexander Wang, Rebecca Taylor, Diane Von Furstenberg and Derek Lam
  • 1970s  fashion revival and Full Fashion fringe
  • Clashing colors, Skinny pants, Puffer jackets, Stacked heel shoes and Mixed plaids at DKNY – “The models looked more Hitchcock heroine than modern woman, yet the quiet discipline showed Ms. Karan reaching a fashion state of grace,” comments Suzy Menkes
  • Straight and narrow, pencil slim silhouettes, Graphics with chic severity “reinforced by the dark palette of burgundy, pine green, navy, brown and black” at Marc Jacobs
  • long monk-like coats paired with sexy shorts, the straight shiny pants and the sleek pony skin coat not drawn in a notebook, but cut, draped and fitted on the body at Theyskens’ Theory brand
  • Linear silhouettes “as plain felted dresses, but often with a wind-blown curve at the hem and a lush velvet belt; or the designer’s signature blouse would be patterned with feathers, drawn as if by dripping ink. The deft construction of the collection gave even grand ball gowns a light touch” at Carolina Herrera
  • Some would argue that waists were the real focus of the week. At Thakoon, they were cinched into sharp, below-the-knee dresses while bolero tweed jackets with their stiff, pointed hems often cut off at the navel – chic, perhaps, but a little too trussed-up
  • Vera Wang kept her fall collection to two main looks: the pleated chiffon dress and the parka
  • 1980s and the Bill Blass revival at Jason Wu, Thakoon Panichgul and Prabal Gurung – “each of whom, not incidentally, sealed his reputation by dressing Michelle Obama — are among those turning out polished, mannerly looks that seem destined for Beekman Place or, for that matter, the Beltway,”  says Ruth La Ferla for NY Times ■

CATWALK shows aren’t just about the clothes. Behind every collection there’s a story, an inspiration or a muse who dictates the look.

Backstage at London Fashion Week, autumn/winter 2011, names like singer Patti Smith were on repeat from creative teams, along with mentions of American Vogue covers from the Seventies, or “spacey futuristic” and “sports luxe” looks.

  10. Pop shock in Paris
    March 3, 2011 – 4:54PM

As if the fashion world hasn’t had enough to digest in recent days with the sacking of Dior designer John Galliano over allegations he hurled anti-semitic comments, mega-star Lady Gaga has added to the insanity.

She’s made a bumping and grinding modelling debut at Mugler’s autumn-winter 2011-12 ready-to-wear show on Wednesday.

Dressed in a sheer top and painted-on pencil skirt, Gaga drew on her wealth of experience with extreme footwear and managed to negotiate the towering platform shoes better than some of the models.

How to make chic exciting? Marco Zanini shows us how at Rochas, with a nod to Hamid Karzai.

    BY Hilary Alexander | 02 March 2011

Take little, striped knits in navy and wine and pair them with silk skirts that flirt around the knees in soft pleats. Add a hint of uptown tailoring in steely grey with just a hint of shine.Toss in a black brocade shift that turns into a beautiful cocoon shape at the back, and accessorise with fur gauntlet gloves. For a walk on the wild side, mix in leopard-print, A-line skirts and easy car-coats, with cashmere knits in the palest of beiges. And for those with a penchant for more colour punch, offer the same car-coats in a bold orange.

  20. Milan Fashion Week highlights: Marni fall 2011 collection

I’ve been a fan of Marni ever since it sent its models down in nautical stripes and sailor hats all those years ago.

And over the past few seasons its kept up the fashion magic. This season was no different.
Like many designers Marni’s creations gave a nod to the 60s and 70s looks.

Geometric prints on cute 60s cut dresses gave the collection a playful look, while the fur cuffed leather gloves and fur jackets over shift dresses gave the collection that luxe look that many designers at Milan have been pushing for.

  24. The Runways: Men’s fashions tailored and tribal
    By ADAM TSCHORN
    Los Angeles Times

The look of the male luxury wardrobe for fall and winter 2011 has come into sharper focus with the end of the latest cycle of men’s runway shows in the world’s fashion capitals. The menswear designers who opened the season in Milan and Paris in mid-January, as well as the ones who brought it to a close at New York Fashion Week last Thursday, are banking on a healthy appetite come fall for British tailoring, bright pops of color, blanket-inspired wool outerwear pieces and toggle-button closures. The New York shows also revealed the beginnings of a menswear trend that was largely absent from the European collections – a dose of geometric, tribal-inspired accents on sweaters, jackets and accessories.

  30. There hasn’t been this much buzz around London Fashion Week since the days of Cool Britannia

    By Liz Jones

London Fashion Week began with a bang: a party hosted by Samantha Cameron, who has been enlisted as window dressing by the British Fashion Council — and to make up for the fact her husband’s cuts have already affected our second-biggest industry’s governing body.

And by the evidence of Friday night, she is already earning her keep. She wore a clever combination of designer and High Street by choosing a splashy satin skirt by Christopher Kane, a dove-grey blouse by new star Emilia Wickstead and shoes by Zara.

  33. New York Fashion Week: It’s Opposite Day at Tommy Hilfiger’s fall-winter menswear presentation
    February 12, 2011 | 11:58 am

The Friday showing of Tommy Hilfiger’s fall-winter 2011 menswear collection felt like the the fashion week equivalent of Opposite Day.

Fresh off last season’s outsized 25th-anniversary bash in the cavernous tents at Lincoln Center, the designer chose to show his menswear in the clubby, intimate dining room of The Lion restaurant in the West Village — a space roughly the size of a Manhattan apartment.

And, while the designer milled about, chatted with guests and posed for photographs before the show began, he didn’t step out to make the traditional designer’s appearance after the runway finale.

For its fall-winter 2011 collection, Y-3 (the collaboration between Adidas and Yohji Yamamoto) could have been having a “True Grit” moment (the floor of the venue was covered in a thin layer of gritty sand, after all), or been simply tapping into the overall Western/rural/country zeitgeist we’ve been noticing, (cue the soulful train-whistle soundtrack and the audio clip of Harry Dean Stanton from the 1984 film “Paris, Texas”), but the clothes that came down the runway on Sunday had an undeniable prairie vibe to them.

  37. NY Fashion Week looks to nighttime glamour for day
By SAMANTHA CRITCHELL, AP Fashion Writer
    Friday, February 11, 2011 at 1:14 p.m.

NEW YORK — There’s been plenty of talk about day-to-night dressing in these frugal times. Next season, you might try night-to-day instead.

Designers at New York Fashion Week flipped the script on Friday, incorporating nighttime glamour into daytime classics instead of leaving women to glam up their more casual clothes.

  38. US buyers expect ’70s influence at NY Fashion Week

    * Semi-annual New York Fashion Week starts on Thursday

    * U.S. consumers are shopping but with caution, buyers say

    By Michelle Nichols

NEW YORK, Feb 10 (Reuters) – Rich colors, refined styles and 1970s minimalism are likely trends at New York Fashion Week, U.S. department store buyers say as they look for clothes to entice wary consumers amid a fragile economic recovery.

Americans are shopping more but remain cautious, demanding value for money from retailers and designers after the worst financial crisis in decades, said buyers from top department stores Barneys, Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom.

  41. Zac Posen’s new Z Spoke line makes a quieter, more wearble statement

By Samantha Critchell (CP) – Feb 11, 2011

NEW YORK, N.Y. — Zac Posen toned it down for his contemporary Z Spoke label this season. No big runway production for New York Fashion Week. No wild fruit prints. And certainly none of the theatrics that Posen was famous for with his signature label, which now gets previewed in Paris.

    Peter Som Tones It Down
    By ERIC WILSON

It’s far too early in the season to be talking about fall trends, but there certainly has been some consensus among the first shows at New York Fashion Week, which have included an abundance of dark and somber designs. There have been great textural coats as well, some in athletic sportswear shapes, at Richard Chai, Wayne Lee and, this morning, at Peter Som, but perhaps that is to be expected after the winter we’ve seen in New York. (Is it a coincidence that both Ms. Lee and Mr. Som showed variations of baseball jackets in luxury fabrics?)

  45. Kate-mania pervades London Fashion Week kick-off
    By Marie-Louise Gumuchian

    LONDON | Fri Feb 18, 2011 5:23pm EST

LONDON (Reuters Life!) – London took over the fashion week baton on Friday, kicking off six days of catwalk shows in a British capital known for its verve and creativity. Royal bride Kate Middleton, who will marry Britain’s Prince William on April 29, brings a new level of interest to the city’s catwalks as she cements her status as a style role model and speculation about who will make THE dress for the royal wedding of the year at Westminster Abbey is on everyone’s lips.

  46. ‘Sam Cam’ opens London Fashion Week amid cuts warning

By Alice Ritchie (AFP) – Feb 18, 2011

LONDON — Britain’s first lady, Samantha Cameron, opened London Fashion Week Friday in her first appearance as the event’s ambassador, while a key figure said the industry was “suffering” under her husband’s cuts.

Keeping her style British in a short black dress by Mulberry and a black Sykes jacket, Prime Minister David Cameron’s wife described her “passion” for fashion and its importance to the British economy.

Message from NY Fashion Week: Consumer choices
Texture, bright colors, long layers and menswear-inspired pieces are just a few of the Fall trends to hit the catwalk

    (AP)

NEW YORK – The message after eight days of fall previews at New York Fashion Week is that the consumer has choices. There isn’t a must-have look or a white-hot label that everyone is talking about.

One editor wants tuxedo pants from Proenza Schouler, another the luxe embroidered coats from Oscar de la Renta. A stylist has her eye on the bias dresses at Sophie Theallet, and Michael Kors has something for everyone.

“A lot of lines have their own identity and personality this season, which is good for consumers,” said Adam Glassman, creative director for O, The Oprah Magazine.

  48. Oscars 2011: Nicole Kidman and Sharon Stone stand by John Galliano in Christian Dior – but are still worst dressed of the night

    By Tamara Abraham
Last updated at 7:28 PM on 28th February 2011

Christian Dior needs all the good press it can get following John Galliano’s arrest last week – but the fashion house failed to win the plaudits it was hoping for when it dressed Nicole Kidman and Sharon Stone for the Oscars last night.

The white Oriental-inspired gown seemed to wear the actress rather than the other way around – the colour was far too bridal and the embellishment dated and ageing.

And while the 43-year-old’s make-up was fresh and pretty – she appears to have eased up on the Botox a little too – her hair was all wrong. The girlish ponytail was far too casual for such a formal dress and occasion and a chic up-do would have been far better.

  50. Lanvin Fall/Winter 2011: Which Looks Do You Love? (PHOTOS, POLL)
    First Posted: 03- 5-11 09:27 AM | Updated: 03- 5-11 09:27 AM

Alber Elbaz showed his latest collection for Lanvin as part of Paris Fashion Week on Friday, and much like after every time we watch one of the designer’s runway presentations, we hope one of two things happens: either we see the dresses on Julianne Moore at a movie premiere (plausible) or we find out Alber is teaming up with H&M again for another fast fashion collection and we find the frocks magically awaiting us on the rack at our local store and live happily ever after. The end. (Hey, never say never!)

  51. Lanvin
With nothing like it seen since the Paris Fashion Week F/W 2011 started, at the Lanvin show, there was a Willow tree just behind the runway. Alber Elbaz spoke about the willow tree backstage saying – “A willow is for emotion, femininity and comfortable roots, “I wanted to start with something very clear and simple: three pieces of coats and suits — traditional elegance again.” With the first model stepping out from behind the darkness of the tree into the light of the catwalk wearing the traditional witches hat (I guess they are synonymous Willow Tree, Witches Hat) , the couple of models that followed after that took a leaf from the first model’s books also wearing witches’ hats, all in boxy silhouettes with hints of gold hardware on their pieces , smart and very business-womany. And voilà! there was an outburst of colours which followed swiftly with models in bright coloured numbers a la delicate and very feminine fabrics. Modern Silk, puff sleeves, bubble skirts, off shouldered pieces { Who would have thought those were still here? } were also in sight. Alber didn’t fail to use one of his favorite models on the runway – Ajak Deng and to our surprise Nana Keita was also following the lead of the sashay!
