The Tomorrow People – the ‘Us and Them’ Syndrome

Bigotry exists. It’s a fact. There’s no getting away from it. We discriminate, we judge, we evaluate, daily on the basis of ‘like’ and ‘dislike’ which is quite a subjective quality if you think about it – we might not even notice we are doing it. It’s human nature. By Fareeha Qayoom

Thank God for Roads!

I must commend Mian Shahbaz Sharif for his forethought in bringing a little sanity to the chaos that was our roads before he undertook to create a little efficiency. Sorting out the Kalma Chowk Crossing, Ferozpur Road, Main Canal Bank Road, Peco Road, Khayban-e-Firdosi, Khayban-e-Jinnah, LDA Avenue Crossing, linking Raiwind Road to the main city, constructing bridges and underpasses and traffic lights and re-routing traffic to move more quickly has made life easy for commuters who have to get to point Z from point A. A lot of people live down there now. By Fareeha Qayoom

Coke Studio: Season 6 – Same Old, Same Old, Blah, Blah…

Not that I want to rain on his parade but I think Coke Studio needs fresh new blood. Its same old, same old; it started with the single “Jogi” and it went downhill fast from there By Fareeha Qayoom

The Power of Negative Thinking

Focusing on the negative makes people forget all the positive things (in life that make it worth living). Moods are contagious and spreading negativity and ingratitude to your fellow human beings should not be allowed. Unfortunately, it’s prevalent across all walks of life in our society. We are generally ungrateful folk. By Fareeha Qayoom

Retail: Rang Ja – Very a La Country…

Overall I love the store and I think this particular ‘Bareeze’ brand is promising addition to our local repertoire – in fact, it’s the first local ready to wear brand that I really think is interesting, slightly edgy and wearable, not to mention, “Made in Pakistan” for Pakistan by Pakistan and of Pakistan. (No, I have not been paid to write this review). By Fareeha Qayoom

The Dandy is Back!

Dress-up clothes are paired with dressed-down clothes. This dapper dude is expensive, fond of luxury, knows the value of fine tailoring but doesn’t mind mixing up stuff from his extensive wardrobe (business clothes to club and weekend to sport’s wear to the great outdoors to beachwear) not to mention, filching stuff from his girl’s wardrobe as well (witness the floral prints, silk and satins, use of saturated colors, face jewelry and scarves!) to come up with an entirely new style statement that makes for some unusual ensembles. Year 2013: Fabric Report – Prices Hit the Roof!

Most of these fabric yardages do not endure beyond one summer – they wear out too quickly – they might not even last ten washes. This is why a ready to wear trouser or top or woven button down shirt from an international brand feels like a bargain now. The other day, a senior colleague purchased a very nice embellished woven top from Mango for about PKR 3000 at full price while we were browsing the malls - I told her to go for it as the price seemed reasonable to me. Mango is a high street brand in UK – know what I mean? By Fareeha Qayoom

Trend Report: Autumn-Winter 2015

Androgynous style, gender blur, unisex – in fact, no demarcation between feminine and masculine clothes. “On the street these days, you can’t always tell who’s a guy and who’s a girl,” Ed Burstell, the managing director of Liberty of London was reported as saying by New York Times and “Sexuality is inside. It’s a private thing,” as Alessandro Michele said for Gucci. By Fareeha Qayoom
