(Un)Real Estate

Growth in real estate costs is not an unusual phenomenon. Costs of prime commercial real estate in New York exceed US100 per sq ft and have grown exponentially since 9/11. Similarly real estate in major metropolitan areas globally has seen quantum increases since 2001. Pakistan has also has experienced some dizzying gains. However in Pakistan some sort of reckoning appears to be on the horizon as the real estate boom has hit a rock wall after a spectacular explosion! by Babur Rafiq

Is Architecture for the people?

Something’s missing. Call it the absence of community- based design. Call it architecture for people. In any understanding of context, socially conscious architecture seems to be the missing component from our new building plans By Fareeha Qayoom

Reality Check!

It’s August again. Pakistan will be celebrating its 62nd birthday this year. Looking back, I think 2009 has been the toughest year yet. No doubt, all businesses are virtually praying for this bad economic patch to be over…however, personally, I think it’s just the ‘perception’ thing...yes, our economic managers are not doing a good (management) job but that’s been true for the past 62 years so what’s changed? Our economy is always on the brink of bankruptcy when the old guard hands over the watch and is always climbing back up after the new guard is sworn in By Fareeha Qayoom

Turf Wars and food security

While we lose ourselves in the mindless on-going soap opera of ‘Overseas Contingency operation,’ (previously, ‘war on terror’), we may lose more than our territory, more than our self respect, more than our people, more than our food, more than our water, more than the air we breathe, more than our livelihood, more than our nuclear arsenal, more than our lifestyles, more than our lives, much more than we realize – we could end up losing our country too. Bit by bit, piece by piece, brick by brick, one inch at a time…and not at our enemies hands, but at our own because we elect ignorant, ill-informed, inadequate leaders who don’t even have the basic negotiation skills to adequately fight our corner… By Fareeha Qayoom
