Coke Studio: Season 7 – Effortless, Professional and Slick

Bottom line, Season 7, episode one by Strings is an effortless, professional production that is indeed “Sound of the Nation” reinterpreting the traditional musical instruments of Sitar, Dholak, Flute – bringing together surprise collaborations from guest stars and the house band. I have no faults to find, though, the presentation is pretty low-key because it borrows from our musical roots and traditions, therefore, hardly contains any elements of surprise– very smooth job indeed. The Empire Strikes Back

Imran Khan and Qadri are not the answer. They are only human and fallible and subject to the same human frailties as the rest of us including stupidity and arrogance. When the dust settles, history will record that they were only rabble rousers. By Fareeha Qayoom

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly – Relationships

...There are so many unhappy, negative people around, especially in Pakistan – our whole culture revolves around criticizing someone, complaining about someone, ganging up and bullying someone, picking on someone who is different, bitching, complaining, moaning, groaning, whining, carping, we spend all our lives just talking negative – in our homes, schools, workplaces, television programs, newspapers… By Fareeha Qayoom

Green Roofs and Indoor Gardens

However in spite of all these frustrations, I am hooked. Gardening is a very rewarding hobby. You can literally see the fruits of your labor right in front of your eyes! ;D By Fareeha Qayoom

Double Standards

The contrast between the ordinary and special is blinding –only in Pakistan. Why can’t all our roads be as green and picturesque as these two??? By Fareeha Qayoom

Denim: Another Fashion Note from the Trenches

Cuts are about people’s shapes anyway. ‘One cut fits’ all can never be an enduring formula. Brands and retailers that cater to different shapes, cuts, washes and maximum range of sizes endure. The rest get left behind. By Fareeha Qayoom

Book Review: AB Lynn’s the EQ Difference

I do know there are many kinds of intelligence around – Howard Gardener listed about seven – for example, Linguistic, Logical-Mathematical, Bodily-Kinesthetic, Spatial, Musical, Interpersonal, and Intrapersonal. Daniel Goleman wrote about another kind called Emotional Intelligence. I do know that you can acquire this one if you naturally do not have it because I read all of his three books on the subject ages ago; (Emotional Intelligence, Destructive Emotions and the New Leaders). ‘Back to the land’ Eco-Fashion

We started with more expensive brands first. An average sweater from imported brand retailers will cost more than PKR 6-7K on an average. A really good sweater might cost even more. (HKB used to be a good resource of imported, fake branded designer sweaters but for the past few years, they have gone to the dogs as well). By Fareeha Qayoom

The Perfect Sky is Torn!

I just finished editing content for our 1/2016 edition. While I was working on final copy, this song kept playing at the back of my mind like a sad refrain…I have yet to come up with the title of our cover story. However, I think this is our theme song for this edition. Its’ so sad. The perfect sky is torn…sigh. By Fareeha Qayoom

Stuck in the Twilight Zone!

And yes, I have now great respect for people in the government who manage to get anything done – push the paper all the way through to build roads, schools, hospitals - the works. It takes hundreds of engineers to change a single light bulb in this joint. People who can do all that are my heroes. I salute you. You must be relentless, tireless and have a lot of tolerance for putting up with loads of BS and still plowing through all that nonsense to come on the other side. By Fareeha Qayoom

What the Heck Are They Showing on the Television?

What kind of television are we showing the masses? Are we raising awareness or doing its direct opposite – giving men the license to behave like that on national TV? You decide. I personally do not subscribe to showing such graphic scenes (that involve hitting women) on national TV even if they are a work of fiction. You are just endorsing bad behavior. Please do not tell such stories. Find better subjects where women are respected and empowered. Not diminished and suppressed. I think the policy makers need to take notice. Please do raise your voice if you agree with me. By Fareeha Qayoom
