Princess Bride – the movie: Two of my favorite scenes

It’s one of the funniest movies I ever saw then and now. I saw it in my youth (I was barely fourteen at the time and still at school when it came out) By Fareeha Qayoom

Everything happens on TV – life in the fast lane

It was the farewell speech from George of Pakistan, published in the Tribune. I read it through. It was superficial look at Pakistan even if George had apparently lived in Pakistan for an age. I mean, there was nothing new here except the old rhetoric that most foreign journalists indulge in – you know, stuff like Pakistan is on the brink, it is almost a failed state, terrorism and bigotry are on the rise, blah, blah, blah By Fareeha Qayoom

Television: Hooray for commercials!

Some commercials are better than programs – for example, Ufone ads. Some make you laugh like Shahid Afridi’s ad for Head and Shoulders shampoo – “mera mind may bahut kuch…except dandruff ki parshani kay” (Translation : I have lots on my mind except worrying about dandruff)– some leave you mystified – like Super biscuits ad. Book Review: Hadley Freeman’s The Meaning of Sunglasses

Have you read The Devil’s Dictionary by Ambrose Bierce? If you have, you might like this book too. It’s an irreverent look at A to Z of fashion from Freeman’s eyes, (she’s the Deputy Fashion Editor at The Guardian). The book is arranged in short alphabetical passages starting from A – “Accessories: going to hell in a handbag,” to Y – “Yoga, Detoxes, and other euphemisms for exercise and diet.” By Fareeha Qayoom

Role of Financial Institutions in Real Estate

Financial institutions are providing the right platform for the Real Estate sector by accommodating them with required amount of financial support whereby mega-housing projects can be launched and also by extending the limits of potential target customers. All of this has been possible thanks to new banking laws, curtailments in the documentation for the procurement of loans, increase in the number of financial institutions, introduction of foreign banks, incorporation of multinational companies with substantial resources, liberal policies of the State Bank of Pakistan and last but not the least, the changed attitude of the people whereby borrowing for Real Estate is not considered taboo any more.
