ll the major style books advise you to first create your own inspiration board – this will help you plan the wardrobe of your dreams. Your style choices should allow you to express yourself. So in an idle moment today – I decided to create my own…
My personal Style statement
Be true to myself. Go my own way, do my own thing. Not interested in being a fashion victim.
I look for classic but casual silhouettes, comfortable, in a great fit, durable and timeless pieces which are low maintenance and no– brainer type of clothes that might sound expensive at first glance but last for years so actually provide great value for money.
I describe myself as a uniform dresser. I like to be comfortable and am not interested in making a splash or indeed a style statement – one of my friends (Aarzoo) described my style once “as a hippie-inspired and very bohemian”…when she met me for the first time, I was wearing this denim skirt (converted from my brother’s discarded jeans), a t-shirt and silver jewelry (rings, earrings, and necklace) and ballet flats.
No I don’t dress sloppy. My clothes are always clean, well pressed and neat. I just don’t mind wearing really old but much loved clothes or accessories, mixing them up with new stuff – some of my clothes like a black turtleneck sweater that has seen better days or one wedge heel gladiator shoes have been part of my wardrobe since the last fifteen years for example…
I always look for
- Quality and value for money
- Buy only durable, long lasting, organic materials like denim, twill, cotton, leather…
- Comfort and Fit
- Great design
- Price
Style Icons that inspire me (casual look)
- Grace Kelly
- Audrey Hepburn
- Marilyn Monroe
My favorite stuff
Here’s a list of my favorite stuff in clothes and accessories…
Wardrobe staples that I keep mixing and matching all the year round for work and leisure
- Classic woven button down shirts
- Woven tunic tops
- Basic scoop neck knit t-shirts in basic and fun colors
- Knit tank tops (camisole) to wear under button down shirts or summer jackets
- Jeans – slim, straight, boot-cut, flare and only one pair of skinny
- Chinos – black, brown and khaki (for those times when you can’t get away with jeans!)
- Jackets and waistcoats
- Denim skirts
Accessories
Prefer drop earrings, necklaces, rings, toe rings and anklets, am not terribly attracted to bangles and bracelets. For belts, I have quite a collection going from basic leather belts to even a couple of bling, bling ones…
Jewelry
- Silver jewelry inset with semi precious stones
- Unique or unusual motifs in costume jewelry like butterfly, flower, or geometric shapes
- Big dial watches – square, round, colorful, plastic, serious or fun
Shoes
- Flat shoes
- Dr. Martens
- Ballet flats
- Flat penny loafers
- Deck or boat shoes
- Flip flops
- Birkenstock sandals
- Converse type sneakers
- Running shoes
- Girly shoes
- Wedge heels
- Chunky heels
- Flat sandals
Bags
- Backpack – sporty or in leather
- Big, roomy, chunky, kitchen– sink shoulder bags
Belts
- Basic leather belt in brown and black – square and round buckles
- Fun belts

How to wear jeans to the office
For every office with a no-jeans policy, there’s an office in which jeans are a staple. But how about those that straddle the two with a jeans-friendly Casual Friday? Or what if you want to kick your denim up a notch?
Reader Elizabeth emailed me with that very question:
I just started working at a casual office and I am having trouble creating work appropriate casual looks. I love seeing how you make jeans work for the office. Are there any “rules” you follow when you wear jeans or other casual clothes to work?
While I don’t really have “rules” for wearing jeans, here are some of my tips:
* The darker wash the better. Look for uniform washes – whiskers and other details can be too casual for the office.
* As far as cuts go, I recommend trouser jeans (usually a thinner fabric that falls straight from your hips down to the floor), wide-leg jeans, or slim cut/skinnies that aren’t clinging to your body.
* I try to go with a dressier shoe. If it is a trouser or wide-leg jean, a pointy-toe looks really chic and balances out the volume. Heels are preferable, since they instantly dress up the jean (even a one-inch).
* The “finishing piece” is key – a nice blazer or cardigan is a great way to really bring jeans into the office.
* I usually keep the top something I’d wear with a trouser to work on a regular day. That way the jeans are the only casual piece in the whole outfit and look less out of place.
* Bold accessories can really dress up jeans as well – belts, necklaces, bracelets (but probably not all at once.

Throw On a Cardigan
Embellished sweaters lend retro charm to a pair of jeans. Look for crafty details that will dress up denim, like Penelope Cruz’s frilly ruffles or Heidi Klum’s beading.

How to Wear Floral Jeans Like a Celebrity
May 24, 2012 @ 1:05 pm
May flowers are springing up everywhere — including on the pants of many celebrities. What we love most about this season’s crop of floral bottoms is how they can be worn in different ways. Katie Holmes went for girly daytime pastels in Current/Elliott, Shenae Grimes gave her look some edge pairing her Alice + Olivia pants with studded boots and leather top, Minka Kelly added sex appeal with her bright peep-toes and Dolce & Gabbana florals, and Kristin Cavallari looked business meeting-ready by layering a black blazer over her saturated darker Joe’s jeans. These ladies prove pretty posies work for almost any occasion — it’s just about mixing the outfit to work for you. Click through the gallery to see more celebrities in the look, and find out where to shop their styles.

How to Wear Colored Jeans Like a Celebrity
Mar 16, 2012 @ 12:36 pm
Colored jeans — from pastel to bright — are an easy, affordable, and versatile way to incorporate spring’s big color trend into your wardrobe. The look offers a playful edge to your everyday pieces, and you can dress it up with a blazer, like Duchess Catherine and sister Pippa Middleton, or go casual like Zoe Saldana and Camila Alves. Don’t be afraid to pair bright denim with a colorful top — an equally bold blouse creates a fun color-block effect. See how more celebrities wear colored denim in the gallery, and get inspiration for how to brighten up your next outfit.

Top 10 American Style Icons
I was recently invited by my friends at RoC BRILLIANCE™ Skincare and Vogue Magazine to check-out an amazing exhibit at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. It was entitled American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity and it explored the style revolutions initiated by American woman from the 1890s to 1940s. From the sporty looks of the “Gibson Girls” to the free-spirited clothes of the “Bohemians” to the seductive dresses of the “Screen Sirens,” the clothes were truly amazing and really helped lay the foundation for American women today.

1. Coco Chanel
Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel re-wrote the rule book when it came to fashion.
She proved critics wrong, and distilled her philosophy into the first global fashion brand responsible for a string of firsts, including the little black dress (1926) and mass produced perfume (Chanel No 5 in 1921).
